Extended Reality (XR) is an umbrella term that encapsulate Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality (MR) and everything in between. The possibilities are endless with XR. It will transform consumer experiences and many vertical markets, from industrial manufacturing to healthcare operation or education and retail. In this article, an analysis of the technology and FPT Software case studies will be show up to clarify the opportunities of this technology.
Why Extended Reality?
In a report from Gartner in early 2018, they estimate that the global wearable electronic device market is forecast to be worth than $50 billion in 2021. Technology strategic planners need to consider how best to compete for a share of the growth opportunity in HMDs for AR, MR and VR, body-worn cameras, smartwatches and other types of wearables.
Based on this statistic, it can be foreseen that this technology has a very high opportunity to change the way we work and collaborate in enterprise environment. Even though the XR environment is virtual, the interaction is real. It allows to enter a virtual world and simulate all complex process such as in VR or overlay information to the real world to reduce human errors in manufacturing chain from AR/MR. Everything is possible and the only limitation is your imagination.

AR for Manufacturing
A demand from one of the biggest Japanese company that just release their AR glasses in 2018 and choose FPT Software to be their first partner to develop its ecosystem. The idea is to transform the physical manual that’s heavy and hard to search into a 3D manual and display on the glass. The application will also have animated guides and hints through each step of the repairing process to make repairing process easier and more interactive. All of tutorials are stored in Microsoft Azure cloud and can be trigger after recognizing the targeted model. In case that the repairing can’t be done by the engineer, he can contact to other specialist or back-end office, so they can guide the engineer through video call – the view of the engineer is shared, and annotation can be made directly through his view.

MR for Smart Home control
While Smart Home is a trending keyword and connected to different platform such as web or mobile devices, an energy company based on Germany have a request to make the experience of their Smart Home devices unique passing by Microsoft HoloLens and FPT is chosen because in their perspective, we have the knowledge to make “wow effects”. In this application, we will simulate a cloud of IoT devices and controlling the house with these. Keep in mind that Mixed Reality application needs lots of communication between FPT and the client because of its uniqueness while interacting the 3D content with the real world and its novelty even for big companies. The application when finished will be shown in International Trade Fairs on 2019.
VR for Training in Industrial Environment
Virtual Reality might be known in entertainment section while providing immersive experience for watching movies, playing game, etc. So, what is its need in Industrial Environment? When working with a researching company in the USA, they demand FPT to simulate multiple process in maintenance on VR and train for their on-field engineer. We had to analyze all processes and set up the scenario, so it can be convenient to the 3D environment. Because this company have multiple sites across the USA so with this application, they can reduce a lot of travelling cost to only buying the VR Head Mounted Display (HMDs). The application also available for multiple users to connect and training VR for Training in Industrial Environment
Besides it’s amazing capability in changing the way people collaborate, when implementing to customer, a big challenge of these experiences is about the price of the devices that hardly be scalable. Hopefully with the fast growth of the market, devices can be more accessible, and applications can be developing without any hardware limitation.
