The Global Semiconductor Revolution
Semiconductors are the backbone of modern technology, fueling everything from AI-driven applications to the Internet of Things (IoT), autonomous vehicles, and 5G networks. The global semiconductor market is valued at approximately USD 600-700 billion for 2024-2025, with expectations to exceed USD 1 trillion by 2030. This rapid growth is fueled by the rise of AI and cloud computing, turning chips from mere components into essential drivers of digital transformation across industries.

The Asia-Pacific region dominates semiconductor manufacturing, while countries like Japan, the US, and Europe lead in high-quality, high-reliability applications. Alongside this growth, geopolitical tensions and supply‑chain disruptions have pushed governments and enterprises to rethink how and where chips are designed, tested, and produced.

For countries like Vietnam, this is a strategic opportunity - not only to capitalize on global demand but also to position itself as a regional powerhouse in the semiconductor value chain.

Vietnam’s Growing Role in Semiconductors
Rather than focusing on capital-intensive fabs, which require billions in investment, Vietnam is targeting practical entry points where it can leverage its existing strengths: a robust electronics manufacturing base; a large, youthful engineering workforce; and deep integration into global supply chains.

In 2024, the Vietnamese government formally issued its National Semiconductor Development Strategy through 2030, with a vision to 2050. Among its key goals is the development of more than 50,000 semiconductor engineers and professionals by 2030, alongside targeted growth in chip design, packaging, testing, and specialized applications.
This policy direction has created momentum across the ecosystem. Vietnamese technology leaders such as FPT and Viettel are moving early, investing in talent, infrastructure, and international partnerships, to secure meaningful positions in the global semiconductor value chain.

FPT’s Approach to Building Semiconductor Capability
FPT places semiconductors as a core pillar of its long-term technology strategy. Building on its long-standing leadership in software and AI-powered solutions, FPT is applying the same principles of innovation and execution to semiconductor development.

Dr. Truong Gia Binh, FPT Founder and Chairman: If Vietnam is to become a prosperous nation,
there is no other path than mastering semiconductor technology.

Design‑First, Market‑Driven Entry

FPT’s semiconductor journey begins where value meets demand: chip design with clear commercial use cases. Rather than pursuing chips as technology demonstrations, FPT focuses on power management and control ICs - critical components that enable AI systems, smart devices, and industrial electronics to operate reliably and efficiently. These chips may not sit at the center of AI model training, but they are indispensable to AI at the edge, where power efficiency, stability, and real‑time control define performance.

FPT's first commercial chip delivery to Japan - one of the most demanding and high-quality markets in the world - proves the company’s ability to meet global standards. By focusing on chips that are ready to be designed, verified, and sold, FPT ensures that every product serves a real market need, driving faster time to commercialization.

As semiconductors and artificial intelligence converge, FPT is taking a smart AI chip approach, where every chip should be an intelligent chip. In line with its commitment to AI-powered innovation, FPT sees AI and chips as two sides of the same coin. The company’s vision is to integrate AI directly into chip designs, enabling devices to process and analyze data more efficiently, with the capacity to make intelligent decisions.

Talent Before Scale
While many semiconductor companies focus on building factories first, FPT’s philosophy is clear: invest in the talent that drives the industry. Semiconductors are fundamentally a people-driven business, requiring highly skilled engineers to design, verify, and test products to global standards.

FPT plans to train 10,000 semiconductor engineers and 50,000 AI specialists to support the country’s development by 2030

On the education front, FPT University has launched dedicated programs in semiconductor circuits and IC design, training engineers across undergraduate and postgraduate levels with curricula shaped by real industry demand. The corporation is also developing new pathways, including a four-year model that combines study in Vietnam with overseas study and internships.  To accelerate quality at scale, FPT is expanding international collaboration with partners such as Silvaco in the USA and Gachon University in South Korea, giving Vietnamese students access to advanced labs, joint programs, and training in mature semiconductor environments. FPT has also partnered with Taiwan’s FCC Partners to establish the Vietnam Semiconductor Development Fund, helping strengthen the talent pipeline and attract broader investment for the sector.

This emphasis aligns closely with Vietnam’s national objective to grow a large, high‑quality semiconductor workforce and ensures that capability grows before capacity. By placing engineers at the core of its semiconductor strategy, FPT is laying the foundation for future expansion into more advanced areas, including AI-enabled silicon and customized chip solutions.

Completing the Value Chain: Testing & Packaging

To truly close the loop in semiconductor manufacturing, FPT has taken a bold step forward with the launch of the first Vietnamese-owned advanced semiconductor testing and packaging plant. This facility will enable FPT to test and package chips at the same high standards as global competitors while keeping costs under control.

The plant will serve as a critical part of the semiconductor ecosystem, not only enhancing commercialization speed but also providing hands-on training for engineers. This strategic investment moves Vietnam one step closer to an end-to-end semiconductor ecosystem that includes design, production, testing, packaging, and market entry. It’s a crucial development in FPT’s mission to create a resilient and competitive semiconductor hub in Vietnam.

Ecosystem Collaboration

FPT recognizes that success in the semiconductor space is rooted in partnerships: with the government and with international semiconductor giants, including ABOV, Restar, Winpac, and VSAP LAB, to accelerate advanced testing and packaging R&D, expand commercialization opportunities for chips processed at the plant, explore potential joint investments in Vietnam, and co-develop highly specialized semiconductor talent from research through mass production.

FPT Partners with ABOV Semiconductor on Next-Generation Chip Development

These partnerships allow FPT to expand its capabilities, strengthen global credibility, and exchange infrastructure, resources, and expertise with leading players. Together, they help build the critical mass needed to accelerate next-generation semiconductor innovation across the value chain.

With Vietnam’s semiconductor ecosystem accelerating and emerging as a premier global hub, FPT is focused on execution across the capabilities it has built, from design and engineering talent to advanced testing and packaging, backed by long-term ecosystem partnerships.
